A Frozen Afternoon in the White Mountains

Ice and snow blanket the Swift River in the White Mountain National Forest.

Jen Hawes of Hanson, Massachusetts, climbs the frozen Champney Falls in the White Mountain National Forest. She uses 12 pointed crampons mounted on insulated plastic mountaineering boots, and an ice axe in each hand to aid her ascent of the waterfall. A rope attached to her climbing harness runs to an anchor at the top of the route, then down to her climbing partner and husband Dan Hawes (not shown), who ensures that she is “on belay” in case of a slip or fall.
