Wingaersheek Beach at Night.

I was alone on Wingaersheek Beach in Gloucester, MA on December 3 hoping to photograph the Milky Way over Ipswich Bay. Instead, I captured the gentle waves, Annisquam light to stage right, and the glow of Newburyport’s  abundant city lights on stage left. The exposure was 15 seconds. Photo Contest Winner

I learned yesterday that this photograph of the Rough Meadows Wildlife Sanctuary in Rowley, Massachusetts was selected as the Grand Prize winner of a photo contest sponsored by the Massachusetts Audubon Society. The photo was made on December 9, 2012 late in the day, preserving the tonal range by combining 3 separate exposures using HDR (high dynamic range technique). You are encouraged to see all the contest winners by clicking here. The sanctuary is jointly managed by Mass Audubon and Essex County Greenbelt and encompasses spectacular coastal woodlands, salt marshes, tidal creeks, and salt pannes. Click to visit

Shopping Center At Dusk

After a full day of photographing the buildings and pedestrian byways of the new MarketStreet Lynnfield, I hoped to capture a definitive image of the new shopping center at dusk. Riding a scissor-lift up about 30 feet above the brick-paved square, I positioned my tripod and Nikon on the platform. I waited for the early evening breeze to abate so I could complete a series of long exposures without vibrations and movement. To the naked eye the actual scene does not appear as colorful and brightly lit. The effect was achieved by combining 4 exposures using a technique called HDR or High Dynamic Range and a plugin for Adobe Lightroom called Photomatix Pro.

Does Vermont have a lock on the best autumn? Could it be the barns, rolling hills, dirt roads, white trim, cows, tractors, rocking chairs….? And, all that maple! This shot is from a trip through the state in early October a few years ago.   Click here to see a larger version, purchase a custom print or to license this image for commercial use.

Late Afternoon Light on the Marsh

Today I explored some favorite locations in Essex County, Massachusetts, chasing the afternoon light and a painterly effect. This view is from The Hamlin Reservation managed by The Trustees of Reservations. This wetland is drained by The Labor-In-Vain Creek. Love that name! The image maximizes tonal range by combining three separate exposures.
