Reflections and Regrets: On and Around A Commercial Fishing Pier

© Paul Mozell 2012

This morning I wandered down to the State Pier in Gloucester, MA with a camera and one lens, hoping to find some photographs of fishermen. I spoke to one lobsterman who said that it hardly pays to go out these days. He said that the prices he’s getting for lobster can’t get much lower. That’s how we get the $4.00/lb price at the supermarket. Pointing to a load of traps on his boat, he said that each trap costs him around $100 and that he has an astounding 800 of them to care for and keep track of. When asked how long the traps last, he replied that some last a week while others last for years, depending on whether or not they get run over by other boats. The owner of a nearby trawler told me, “It’s just not the same anymore—there just aren’t enough fish. I’m not going out today”

A Road in Paradise

A sublime forest road traverses the Appleton Farms & Grass Rides in Ipswich, MA

This evening when I took two visitors from California for a walk through the Appleton Farms & Grass Rides in Ipswich, MA, one of them said, “this is paradise.” Perhaps it is—especially when home is a Los Angeles suburb. To me, the forested landscape of this 300 year old farm is sublime. Visit this place, and you too will discover a refuge lost in time.

Annual Homage to the Tomatoes of Verrill Farm

Along with swimming in a clear New England pond or the chilly Atlantic the other great joy of summer is fresh fruits and veggies. I never miss the summer harvest at Verrill Farm in Concord, MA where my favorite crops include the sweetest corn, most buttery potatoes, and most colorful and diverse tomatoes to be found in the Boston area.  Continue reading

Gibbs Brook Falls – Crawford Notch, NH

Gibbs Brook Falls in Crawford Notch New Hampshire

I first encountered the Gibbs Brook Falls on my very first hike through the Presidential Range many years ago. Since then I have photographed this modest and forever-changing cataract many times — first in 35mm, then with my 4×5 view camera, and several times with digital gear. I think I’ve captured this spot is all 4 seasons as well. This latest rendition was made on July 27 while hiking with my 10 year old daughter. Continue reading
