Sailing on Clearwater

The Sloop Clearwater is a replica of a commercial fishing vessel common to the Hudson River in the mid 19th century. Launched in 1969 by Pete Seeger, a bunch of folk singers, history buffs, and environmental activists, it sails the Hudson to promote clean water and environmental stewardship. (Paul Mozell)
From the archives — In the 1970’s I was a volunteer deckhand, folksinger, and event organizer on sloop Clearwater. This photograph was made during one of many short sails on the Hudson River and New York Harbor. Here, three crew members tighten up the jib in a stiff breeze. The 106 foot long Clearwater can still be seen sailing its home waters from April to November of each year. Up On the Roof

Some days I feel very lucky to be a photographer. Yesterday, I made these images from the roof of a building in downtown Boston. The view was almost as good as flying. The North End looks like a small village, marked by the famous steeple of The Old North Church. In the distance are East Boston, Logan Airport, and the Deer Island waste processing plant.

The Leonard Zakim Bridge crosses the Charles River, joining Boston proper and Charlestown. Easily the most outstanding structure to come out of Boston’s infamous Big Dig construction project, its cable stay design was inspired by Boston’s maritime history. The pointed towers echo the form of the nearby Bunker Hill monument in Charlestown.

Rocky Cape Ann Coastline

Annisqaum Harbor Light

Although I’m frustrated by this winter’s lack of snow, Nordic skiing, and classic winter scenery, the rocky coast is still worth exploring at any time of year.

This lighthouse presides over the rocky northern coast of Cape Ann Massachusetts. The location is fairly inaccessible and is seen by most first time visitors to the area from across the harbor at Wingaersheek Beach.

Bass Rocks, Gloucester, MA

The rocky coastline of Cape Ann might easily be mistaken for Downeast Maine. The boulders along the shore vary in shape from jagged and sharp, to smooth and rounded.

Bass Rocks, on the south-facing shoreline of Cape Ann, reminds me most of Mt. Desert, Maine, several hundred miles away.

These images and many more, are available as collectable fine art prints, or licensed stock photographs.

Winter Shoreline

It was a perfect winter afternoon to search for photographs among the reddish granite boulders, fresh snow patches, and blue green waves, under the cobalt blue sky. Halibut Point in Rockport, MA is an elbow of land that juts out from Cape Ann. On a clear day like this one you can see stretches of the Massachusetts and New Hampshire coastlines and even a few islands in Down East Maine.

Ipswich River On A Winter Afternoon

The mouth of the Ipswich River

On a winter day in early January when I might have preferred to have seen ice and snow blanketing the North Atlantic shoreline, I spent an afternoon meandering around Ipswich Massachusetts, looking for dramatic afternoon light. This view of Castle Hill is from the tiny neighborhood of Little Neck, a hilly promontory covered with a mix of year-round and summer homes, each with a dramatic view of the sea and the river.

I have encountered this tree many times at its home in the Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary. Its multiple trunks, hoop-shaped branches and warm red hue seem to welcome and embrace all visitors.
